Museums from open-air to classical

The Hochstraßenmuseum accompanies walkers along the historic Semmeringer Hochstraße. Architectural history comes to life in ten showcases along the way.

The Hubmer memorial in Nasswald commemorates Georg Hubmer, the "Rax King". As a pioneer of timber transport, he opened up the Höllental valley around 1800 and built alluvial canals at great expense to extract coal.

In Gloggnitz, the Karl Renner Museum in the former villa of Federal President Dr Karl Renner. The exhibition conveys the historical context of the First and Second Republic in a concentrated and accessible way.

Insights into the history of Vienna's water supply are offered by the Wasserleitungsmuseum in Kaiserbrunn. Here you can see how drinking water from the Rax and Schneeberg regions has reached Vienna to this day.

Semmering railway world heritage site

In a former railway caretaker's cottage, directly on the railway hiking trail, the Ghega Museum is dedicated to the life and work of engineer Carl Ritter von Ghega - the builder of the Semmering Railway.

How the Semmering Railway became a UNESCO World Hertige site is shown at the information centre at Semmering railway station.

Tour tip

Museum cycling

Starting from Wr. Neustadt, there are many museums along the cycle paths to the Semmering-Rax region. The following museums can be visited free of charge with the Lower Austria Card: Neunkirchen Municipal Museum, Dr Karl Renner Museum in Gloggnitz and the Höllental Railway as the final stop on the cycle tour. Afterwards, you can take the train from Payerbach-Reichenau station for a leisurely return journey.

Exhibitions and galleries

If you are observant when travelling, you will discover art in special places in the Semmering-Rax region: in small studios, galleries, on the meadows of Gut Gasteil or in the historic rooms of Reichenau Castle. Reichenau Cultural Castle whose origins date back to the 12th century, visitors to the permanent exhibition "Kulturerbe Reichenau" can immerse themselves in the past.
