A Heurige is a traditional establishment where farmers offer their home-grown produce directly. Heurige are particularly common in the Semmering-Rax region. Here, cider and apple juice is freshly pressed from local apples - each farm has its own flavour.
The menu often includes simple, cold dishes such as sandwiches or salads. Anyone who thinks this is boring is wrong: a visit to a Heurigen is an authentic demonstration of the quality and variety of regional products.
Heurigen do not open all year round. A little bush at the house indicates that it's "Ausgsteckt" - then you can taste and enjoy regional specialities on the spot.
Ausg'steckt is!
