Description

Reichenau an der Rax has a lot to offer. In addition to cultural highlights such as the Festspielhaus, Wartholz Castle, Reichenau Castle and the spa gardens, the town is also a starting point for numerous hikes to the surrounding mountains. In addition to the high alpine mountains Rax and Schneeberg, the Kreuzberg is also a beautiful place to hike. Easy walking paths and somewhat more challenging mountain hiking trails lead from Reichenau via Hinterleiten and Stoijer Höhe past the Josefskapelle chapel up to the Speckbacherhütte at an altitude of 1093 meters. You can stop for refreshments at the Flackl Wirt. At the top of the Speckbacher hut, you will be spoiled with good home cooking. A special highlight is the oldest and probably largest rhododendron in Europe. The 105-year-old tree is 131 m² in size! Another highlight of the mountain hut is of course the wonderful view of the surrounding area with Semmering and Schneeberg.

The hut can be reached by car or bus, and you can also walk back down to Reichenau in around 2 hours via hiking trails.

Route description The start is in the Kurpark of Reichenau. First, we walk through Eichengasse past historic villas up to the Flackl guesthouse. Then we follow the blue-marked hiking trail to the Stoier family farm and further up to the Stoierhöhe. We keep right on the red-marked path. Over Quellenhof, we then hike up to the Speckbacher Hut. On the way back, we take the same route to Stoierhöhe, continue along the red marking, and then return to Reichenau an der Rax via Giefingfeld and the Hinterleiten goods road.
Parking There are ample parking spaces available in Reichenau.
