We want your hikes in the Vienna Alps to be an all-around enjoyable and safe experience.
Therefore, please keep the following in mind:
When choosing a route, make sure it matches your mountaineering experience and physical fitness . Check the weather forecast in advance. The weather in the mountains can change surprisingly quickly. Therefore, always set out properly equipped (appropriate footwear, rain gear). Check to see if the huts and snack bars you plan to visit along the way are open. Let someone know your route and your planned return time before you set out. Stay on marked trails and avoid taking shortcuts. Due to dry conditions, meadows and forests are highly flammable. Be careful with fire and report any potential fire immediately to the fire department. (122) Do not litter and dispose of trash properly.
You can find additional safety tips here.
Always bring appropriate maps with you. Wear sturdy shoes suitable for the hike, and bring sunscreen, rain gear, water, and a light snack. Bring your cell phone and save the mountain rescue emergency number: 140
The starting point of the hike is the pass summit. The trail begins on the left at the Christophorusstube. Follow the Teichkrone path across the little bridge, then up a short, steep incline to the wide forest trail. This trail continues with a gentle ascent into Styria. After about 2 km, the trail becomes steeper again as it winds through the forest up to the ridge. The forest trail continues on a gentle descent to the Unterstandshütte (halfway point) on Liechtensteinstraße (a forest road) and then out of the valley to Hochstraße. Turn right and pass the parish church and the Hotel Panhans to reach the starting point at the pass summit. Numerous rest areas and many scenic viewpoints invite you to linger.
Please note: There are no places to stop for refreshments along the trail until you reach the pass summit.
