The Thalhof apartment building in Reichenau an der Rax is still an insider’s tip
A carefully renovated historic mansion featuring antiques, interiors by the Wiener Werkstätten, and a great attention to detail. Surrounded by unspoiled nature.
Stay where Sigmund Freud, Empress Elisabeth, Arthur Schnitzler, and Josef Hoffmann once lived
Preserving and maintaining the building’s structure was a top priority for the Rath family, who spent three years restoring the Thalhof to its former glory. Thanks to their efforts, this historic house has finally entered the 21st century. The many salons and apartments (ranging from 50 to 60 m²) pay homage to famous guests. Each is individually furnished. Exposed murals and high-quality natural materials meet high-speed internet, modern artwork on the walls, and designer lighting.
The World of the Good Old Summer Retreat
The Thalhof was first mentioned as an estate in 1652. In the 19th century, with its elegant salons, world-class cuisine, and 120 rooms, it ranked among the top hotels in Europe. Aristocrats, artists, and writers were regular guests. Today, guests particularly appreciate the tranquility and the fresh country air. They immerse themselves in nature—in the truest sense of the word—and take walks through the surrounding forest.
Regional breakfast with a view of the Rax
When it comes to food and drink, the Thalhof has remained true to its long-standing tradition. Just as it did 200 years ago, the majority of the ingredients come from the hotel’s own farm. There is also a vegetable garden on the property and a hunting ground in the adjacent forest. At least two-thirds of what’s served for breakfast comes from the farm, the Rax area, or the Schneeberg region. Vegan options included.
A gathering place for foodies, hunters, and mountaineers
As part of “Klassik im Thalhof,” the old ballroom continues to host a wide repertoire of operas, operettas, piano recitals, and chamber concerts. Hunting enthusiasts can head out on the hunt right from the front door; sports enthusiasts appreciate the tennis court and various running and mountain biking trails; and hikers love the ascent to the Knofeleben. Take the Rax Cable Car to follow in the footsteps of the great thinkers in this summer retreat region.
