Wiener Neustadt—the second-largest city in Lower Austria—is the vibrant heart of the Vienna Alps. This former imperial city reached the height of its importance in the 15th century. The “Ever Faithful” was the undisputed favorite residence of both Emperor Frederick III and his son Maximilian I. Landmarks such as the late Romanesque cathedral, the military academy from the time of Maria Theresa, and the Kasematten shape the cityscape. As a cultural hotspot in southern Lower Austria, there’s plenty to do here year-round.

Whether it’s a family outing, a day trip, or group trip by bus—the city and its region offer a wide variety of experiences in every season: from castles, natural landmarks, and museums to scenic overlooks, adventure parks, and sports facilities. The city is also the perfect starting point for day trips in the Vienna Alps region—Schneeberg, Rax, Semmering, Wechselland, mountain biking, cycling, and hiking—the possibilities are virtually endless.

Numerous shopping opportunities, cafés, restaurants, and markets bring the spacious pedestrian zones in the city center to life. With the Marienmarkt, Wiener Neustadt has a new culinary hub right on the main square.

Furthermore, Wiener Neustadt has a remarkable history. Most of the sights are located in the city center, including the water tower —the city’s landmark—and the Reckturmwith sections of the city wall, and the cathedral. Also worth seeing is the castle in Wiener Neustadt, which today serves as the seat of the Theresian Military Academy. The Neukloster Abbeyshowcases its treasure and curiosity chamber as well as its absolutely remarkable library. In 2036, Wiener Neustadt’s green jewel, the City Park, was designated a model garden by “Natur im Garten.”

Wiener Neustadt also offers a wide range of recreational activities. The sports and water park Aqua Nova on the outskirts of town draws visitors with a 100-meter slide, a waterfall, and a whitewater course. Right next to it is the newly built outdoor adventure pool with a slide, a diving tower, and a beach volleyball court. In the Arena Nova , numerous concerts, exhibitions, and trade shows take place. A movie theater and bowling alleys make for the perfect bad-weather activities. Wiener Neustadt is an ideal starting point for tours of the surrounding countryside, whether as a day trip or with an overnight stay at one of the hotels right in the heart of the city—at the Hilton Garden Inn or the Hotel Zentral.

Thanks to its excellent rail connections, Wiener Neustadt is the perfect destination for a short getaway without a car. The train station is within walking distance of downtown. All sights are within easy reach of one another. By bike or Segway, you can perfectly explore the wonderful routes leading out of the city.
