The Joy of Reaching the Summit & Time in the Mountain Huts

Truly memorable moments

Whether on Lower Austria’s highest mountain, across the vast Rax Plateau or through the rolling alpine pastures of the Wechsel:

A hike in the Vienna Alps isn’t complete without a stop for refreshments – just as much as the view from the summit. We’ve picked out four routes where the mountain experience and time in the huts come together particularly well. And if you’d prefer to take it at a more leisurely pace, you can simply let the mountain railway take care of part of the ascent.

Hiking boots or a mountain railway? Ideally, both.

The beauty of the Vienna Alps is that the joy of reaching a summit doesn’t always have to involve climbing as many metres as possible. The Schneebergbahn, the Rax cable car, the Semmering mountain railwayand the Erlebnisalm Mönichkirchen offer a wide variety of ways to tailor a day in the mountains to suit your own preferences.

The more active climb up from the valley, whilst leisurely walkers start their hike higher up the mountain – or choose the cable car for the return journey. What all these options have in common are scenic routes, a stop for refreshments along the way, and that special feeling when, after taking those final steps, the mountain hut’s terrace awaits.

    1. To Lower Austria’s highest mountain and the Fischerhütte

Even the journey to Puchberg gives you a sense of who takes centre stage here: at 2,076 metres, the Schneeberg towers over the surrounding landscape and is the highest mountain in Lower Austria. Once you reach the summit, a surprisingly vast high-mountain landscape unfolds – with alpine trails, a wide horizon and views that, on a clear day, stretch far beyond the Vienna Alps.

    2. Rax: A tour of the huts to the Neue Seehütte

On the Rax, a quick stop at a mountain hut turns into a whole day’s hike. The high plateau is ideal for hiking along scenic paths from one mountain hut to the next. A particularly lovely circular route starts at the top station of the Rax cable car. From there, the path first leads to the Ottohaus and continues along the Kammweg and past the Preiner Wand Kreuz to the Neue Seehütte at 1,643 metres.

    3. Semmering: Up to the Hirschenkogel and to the Seewirtshaus

At the Semmering, mountain adventures and enjoyment go hand in hand. From the top of the pass, an easy walk leads up to the Hirschenkogel. Over a distance of around 3.4 kilometres, the route climbs approximately 345 metres in altitude – ideal for anyone looking for a manageable summit walk with beautiful panoramic views.

    4. Wechsel: A walk through the Schwaig to the Mönichkirchen Schwaig

The mountains become gentler as you reach the Wechsel – but the views are no less spectacular. Instead of rugged peaks, the landscape here is characterised by alpine meadows, forests and the ‘Schwaigen’ typical of the region. From Mönichkirchen, an easy walk leads up to the Mönichkirchner Schwaig. Allow around 50 minutes for the roughly 2.4-kilometre walk, which involves a 200-metre climb. Once at the top, you can really take in the vastness of the Wechsel region – ideally combined with a stop for refreshments at the Mönichkirchner Schwaig mountain inn.
