Museum St. Peter an der Sperr

About the museum

The former city museum, founded in 1824, and the former monastery church of St. Peter an der Sperr have merged to form a magnificent and fascinating complex dedicated to history, culture and society. The renovation for the 2019 Lower Austrian Provincial Exhibition has transformed the St. Peter an der Sperr Museum, alongside the Kasematten, into an architectural gem in Wiener Neustadt.

The Dominican convent of St. Peter, originally built on the northern city wall and part of the defensive fortifications, has been offering unique exhibition spaces in the nave, cloister and modernised annex since 2020.

Cultural Events

The Museum St. Peter an der Sperr is a forum for social issues, discussions and exhibitions on a wide variety of topics. Its exciting architecture alone makes the museum foyer a unique space for cultural events, both indoors and outdoors. Directly adjacent, the Mayor's Garden complements the overall ensemble and attracts an enthusiastic audience with its special atmosphere for concerts and many other events.

Children & Young People

At the Museum St. Peter an der Sperr, children can discover the history of the city in a playful way with the whole family.

Interactive, age-appropriate workshops and guided tours on the city's history and current exhibitions spark young visitors' interest in history and socio-political topics. The museum app, a puzzle rally and a scavenger hunt invite visitors to explore the museum on their own.

It's often most fun when you're with your whole class, which is why there is a special programme designed specifically for school groups.

Telling the Story of Wiener Neustadt

The Museum St. Peter an der Sperr presents the approximately 800-year history of Wiener Neustadt in a modern, interactive permanent exhibition entitled "neuSTADT ERZÄHLEN" (Telling the Story of Wiener Neustadt). The municipal exhibition combines important art-historical treasures, an extensive collection of paintings, evidence of everyday life and outstanding sacred art. The contemporary presentation invites visitors to rediscover familiar things and immerse themselves in more in-depth content.
