Wiener Neustadt Cathedral

Cathedral

Anyone driving along the A2 motorway towards Wiener Neustadt will see the two pointed spires of Wiener Neustadt Cathedral rising above the stone fields. They are a striking landmark of the city and served as important landmarks for travellers as far back as the Middle Ages. Shortly after the city was founded, construction began in the Romanesque style around 1200. Over the centuries, the church has been continuously adapted to the latest styles. In the 14th century, the Romanesque apse was replaced by a Gothic lanchor, and during the Baroque period, the interior was completely redesigned. At the end of the 19th century and throughout the 20th century, construction work turned into renovation work, so that today the Liebfrauenkirche shines in all its splendour.

Numerous personalities have left their mark on the cathedral, whether as builders and donors of altars or works of art, or in the form of their tombs. The cathedral can be visited free of charge every day – a visit to the church is definitely worthwhile. You will be amazed at what there is to discover here.
