The starting point of the hike is the Gasthof Oberer Eggl in Prein an der Rax. The starting point can be reached by public transport and is a quarter to half an hour's walk from the center of Prein with the wellness and seminar hotel Raxalpenhof. You hike along a short stretch of country road towards Griesleiten, then continue along a quiet hiking trail through wooded areas to Preiner Gscheid. You are accompanied along the way by the Rettenbach stream and its tributaries.
At the Edelweißhütte, the terrace or guest garden invite you to relax in the open air. You can fortify yourself with home cooking, seasonal specialties, Austrian and Hungarian cuisine and homemade pastries. If you want, you can hike even further from here, as the Edelweißhütte is not only a popular meeting point for bikers but also a hiking hub. From here, you can hike to the Habsburghaus, for example, or start the popular hut hopping hike from here.

When choosing a route, make sure it matches your mountain experience and physical fitness . Check the weather forecast in advance. The weather in the mountains can change surprisingly quickly. Therefore, always set out properly equipped (appropriate footwear, rain gear).
Check to see if the huts and snack bars you plan to visit along the way are open. Let someone know your route and your planned return time before you set out. Stay on marked trails and avoid taking shortcuts.
Due to dry conditions, meadows and forests are highly flammable. Handle fire with care and report any potential fire immediately to the fire department. (122) Do not litter; dispose of trash properly.

Always bring appropriate maps with you. Wear sturdy shoes suitable for the hike, and bring sunscreen, rain gear, water, and a light snack. Bring your cell phone and save the mountain rescue emergency number: 140
We set off westward toward Prein and turn right toward Griesleiten. Shortly after that, we turn left again and continue straight ahead on the hiking trail. At the intersection after the switchbacks, we turn right onto trail No. 43. We follow the trail for about one kilometer, keeping straight ahead, and then leave trail No. 43 again. At the fork in the trail, we turn right and cross the Rettenbach. The trail leads us straight ahead onto Prein Road. Here, we take a detour to the right onto a path and then return to the road by turning right again. We follow the road to the right and, via the path branching off to the left, arrive directly at the Edelweißhütte.
Parking is available at the Oberer Eggl Inn or in Prein/Rax.
From Vienna, take the A2 Südautobahn to the S6 Semmeringsschnellstraße and take the Gloggnitz exit. Follow the B27 to Reichenau an der Rax; at the roundabout there, go straight ahead and then turn left toward Hirschwang an der Rax. Continue toward Edlach, turn slightly left toward Dörfl, and continue on the L135. Follow the L135 to Prein to the Oberer Eggl Inn.
From Graz, take the S35 or A2 to the S6 Semmering Expressway and take the Gloggnitz exit. Follow the B27 to Reichenau an der Rax; at the roundabout there, go straight ahead and then turn left toward Hirschwang an der Rax. Continue toward Edlach, turn slightly left onto Dörfl, and continue on the L135. Follow the L135 to Prein to reach the Oberer Eggl Inn. (Option 1)
Take the S35 to the S6 Semmering Expressway and take the Mürzzuschlag-West exit. Follow the B23, turn right onto Hauptstraße, continue on Stojenstraße, then continue on Preiner Gscheid Str. until you reach Prein and the Oberer Eggl Inn. (Option 2)
Take the Südbahn to Payerbach-Reichenau . Between the Payerbach-Reichenau train station and the nearby "Berta-Heller-Straße" stop, take Regional Bus 342 or the book the RUFbus Semmering-Rax .
