From the historic Kurpark Reichenau to Hinterleiten, Gasthof Flackl, over the Stoierhöhe to the Speckbacher huts (1093m).
You hike from the Reichenau spa gardens via Hinterleiten (Gasthof Flackl) to Stoierhöhe, past the Josefskapelle chapel to the Speckbacherhütte hut. At the top of the Speckbacher hut, you will be spoiled with good home cooking. A special highlight is the over 100-year-old and probably largest rhododendron in the Eastern Alps, with a size of 131 m² and up to approx. 40,000 white and delicate pink flowers. There is a wonderful view of the surrounding mountains.
The hut can be reached by car, the RUFbus or public transport.
Your hikes in the Vienna Alps should be a thoroughly pleasant and safe experience. Please observe the following:
Preparation
Make sure when choosing the route that it suits your experience and fitness. Check the weather forecast beforehand. Weather in the mountains can change rapidly and unexpectedly, so always set out properly equipped (e.g. rain protection).
Check whether the huts and snack stations you want to visit en route are open. Inform someone about your route selection and planned return time before you start.

Always take suitable maps with you. Wear sturdy shoes appropriate for the route, bring sun and rain protection as well as water and a snack. Take your mobile phone and save the mountain rescue emergency number: 140
The start is in the Kurpark of Reichenau. First, we walk through Eichengasse past historic villas up to the Flackl guesthouse. Then we follow the blue-marked hiking trail to the Stoier family farm and further up to the Stoierhöhe. We keep right on the red-marked path. Over Quellenhof, we then hike up to the Speckbacher Hut. On the way back, we take the same route to Stoierhöhe, continue along the red marking, and then return to Reichenau an der Rax via Giefingfeld and the Hinterleiten goods road.
There are ample parking spaces available in Reichenau.
A2 to Seebenstein junction - S6 to Gloggnitz - B27 to Reichenau an der Rax
- By train to Payerbach-Reichenau station
- Then continue by regional bus 341 or the RUFbus Semmering-Rax to Reichenau an der Rax.
