Verträumter Pfad in Aspangberg-St. Peter

Preparation

When choosing a route, make sure it matches your experience and fitness level. Check the weather forecast in advance. Always set out with the appropriate gear (e.g., rain gear).

Let someone know which route you’re taking and when you plan to return before you set out.

Always bring appropriate maps with you. Wear sturdy shoes suitable for the hike, and bring sunscreen, rain gear, water, and a light snack. Bring your cell phone and save the mountain rescue emergency number: 140

We start at the town’s sand court and head toward St. Corona Street; here, a somewhat hidden path marked with a “Märchenwiese” sign branches off next to the stream. We follow this path for about half an hour before passing a bridge and a few signposts. Now you can decide whether to hike just the Hoffeld loop; to do so, cross the bridge and follow the trail markers. These lead to the road toward St. Corona; we cross it and continue our hike on the other side of the road.

Here, a path leads slightly uphill into the forest. We follow it all the way to the Hoffeld settlement. Here we come to another intersection with numerous signposts.

Now we follow the settlement road until we reach a “No Entry” sign on the right, along with more trail markers. We turn onto the forest road marked by the “No Entry” sign and walk back across the hillside at mid-elevation toward the municipality of Aspangberg-St. Peter. Along the way, we’ll enjoy beautiful views of Aspang and can soak up the sunny south-facing slope.

Second Option

This route is a bit harder to find, but it offers beautiful views of the Wechsel side.

The first part of the trail follows the stream as before. But at the bridge, we simply continue on until we come to a path that branches off to the left and leads uphill. We follow this path, and it takes us to a forest road that’s already overgrown. We keep to the right and then continue straight ahead until the path splits; we stay to the left. Here, the path climbs a bit more steeply. Finally, we reach the “Wetzlbauern.” After that, we come to the road toward St. Peter and walk until we reach a left-hand curve. Here we spot a red-white-red barrier (the second one overall since we’ve been on the paved road) on the left side. Now we turn onto a forest road again. We follow it to the point where we ascended the narrow path from the stream. We head down to the right and find ourselves back at the bridge. Now we can decide whether to retrace our steps along the same path next to the stream or to add the Hoffeld loop to our route at this point, as I did. If you combine both loops, the hike takes about two hours at a leisurely pace. Along the way, we can enjoy beautiful forest trails and paths, a cozy bench by the water that invites you to take a break, and a wayside shrine.

Take the Südbahn to Aspang Markt Station, then take Regional Bus 369 to the Aspang Markt Sonneck stop
