This hike leads from the summer resort of Payerbach up the Kreuzberg to the Speckbacherhütte and offers wonderful views of the Semmering, Rax and Schneeberg. Here you can admire the longest viaduct of the Semmering Railway - this runs through Payerbach and is home to the Vinodukt, where you can see a multimedia show about the Semmering Railway and take part in a wine tasting.
A short detour to the Loos House is definitely worthwhile. The villa designed by Adolf Loos now houses a hotel and restaurant.
Along the section of Feldbacherstraße, please pay special attention to children due to road traffic!
Sturdy footwear, weatherproof or warm clothing depending on the season; if you come into dusk, it is recommended to bring a headlamp or flashlight.
Always take enough drinking water with you on hikes.
From the starting point at the Payerbach town hall at Ortsplatz 7, we follow Feldbacherstraße past the Gothic fortified church of St. James. Continuing along the street and under the viaduct of the Semmering Railway World Heritage site, after about 1 km we turn right and follow the red markings or yellow signs - the narrow path leads us gently uphill through the forest and partly through meadows. We continue via Stojerhöhe, the Josef Chapel and Quellenhof until we reach the Speckbacher Hut after about 2 1/2 hours.
As the return route to Payerbach, we take the path over Sommerhöhe and Totenberg to the Polleres inn (shortly before, the turnoff to the Loos House is recommended) - over Voselhöhe and the Judas Thaddäus Chapel we follow the path alongside the stream via the Prasch sawmill back to Feldbacherstraße and then return to Payerbach to our starting point.
Free parking is available near the town hall.
By car from Vienna, take the A2 to the Seebenstein junction. Continue via the S6. Leave the motorway at Gloggnitz. Continue on the B27 to Payerbach. At the first traffic light turn left onto Karl Feldbacher Straße until Ortsplatz.
Take the train from Vienna via Wiener Neustadt to Payerbach-Reichenau station.
This route is also suitable for children.
