Semmering Johannesloipe

When choosing a route, make sure it matches your mountaineering experience and physical fitness . Check the weather forecast in advance. Make sure you have the right gear, such as sturdy boots, trekking poles, waterproof outdoor clothing, a hat, etc. Be sure to drink plenty of water, even in winter! Be mindful of the early onset of twilight and plan your hike with particular care. Check whether the huts and snack bars you plan to visit along the way are open. Let someone know your chosen route and your planned return time before you set out. Stay on marked trails and avoid taking shortcuts. Please also keep in mind that trail markers may be hidden by snow in winter, so be sure to prepare well for your hike! Do not litter ; dispose of your trash properly.

Make sure you’re properly equipped for the season (cross-country skiing gear, winter-appropriate clothing). Bring a hiking map and your cell phone, and save the mountain rescue emergency number: 140

The Johannesloipe - Cross-Country Skiing for Beginners & Enthusiasts

The starting point of the Johannesloipe is located at the valley station of the four-seat chairlift. It runs flat for the first 3.3 km into the Dürrgraben. After crossing the stream (the trail may be interrupted here for about 50 m), continue following the forest road until you reach a loop in the meadow on the right, which marks the turnaround point.

From Vienna, take the A2 Südautobahn to the S6 Semmering Expressway and take the Maria Schutz exit. Turn right onto the L4168. Continue on Semmering/L4168, Semmeringstraße, and Passstraße until you reach the B306.

From Graz, take the S6 Semmering Expressway and take the Spital/Semmering exit. Turn left onto Semmering Ersatz Str./B306. Continue on the B306

Travel by train to the Semmering station. Alternatively, book a customized trip with the RUFbus Semmering-Rax, which will take you to the starting point.
