Description

At an altitude of 1523 meters lies the summit of the Sonnwendstein with the Bergkircherl, where wonderful views open up. In the immediate vicinity, at an altitude of 1481 meters, you will find the Pollereshütte with a wonderful panoramic view of the World Heritage Semmering railway, Rax, Schneeberg and the Semmering area, as well as the Wechsel and the Bucklige Welt. The starting point of the hike is Maria Schutz with its popular pilgrimage church . The ascent is first via a forest path and then via the north side of the Sonnwendstein on the Gebirgsjägersteig trail. The path is narrow and steep and can only be walked on with good footwear.

Route description A forest road starts just 100 metres away from the Maria Schutz pilgrimage church. We will make a sharp right turn and walk for about 600 metres, before turning left onto a path. We will then follow the Gebirgsjägersteig route (marked in green), which will take us up the Sonnwendstein on a path with narrow bends.

Getting there From Vienna: Follow the A2 and S6 before taking the exit for Maria Schutz, and then driving towards Maria Schutz/Semmering. Turn left onto the L4168. Continue along Göstritz/the L4168 to Maria Schutz. From Graz: Follow the A2 or S35 before taking the exit for Maria Schutz, and then drive towards Maria Schutz/Semmering. Turn left onto the L4168. Continue along Göstritz/the L4168 to Maria Schutz.
Public transport From Wr. Neustadt Hauptbahnhof take the regional train (direction Payerbach-Reichenau) to the Gloggnitz stop. Continue with the regional bus 1760 (towards Semmering Landes Grenz or Semmering Panhans) to the Maria Schutz Kirchenplatz stop. More information at www.oebb.at or www.vor.at
