Located at an elevation of 1,548 meters, the Gloggnitzer hut was completely renovated in 2011 and is run by volunteer members of the Gloggnitz chapter of the ÖGV on Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays. The food and drink offerings—including soups and beverages —are simple but hearty (cash only). The hut also offers sleeping accommodations in a dormitory-style room. Open year-round (with a winter break from mid-November to early January); please check the hut’s opening hours.
Ski tourers in particular appreciate the Gloggnitzer hut, not least because of its location above the Kesselgraben, which serves as a starting point for fantastic tours. Even in summer, the hut is accessible only on foot. Via ferratas of varying difficulty levels—such as the Hoyos, Rudolfs, Gaisloch, Alpenverein, and Teufelsbadstubensteig routes—lead through the Großes Höllental to the Gloggnitzer Hut. You can also take a leisurely walk to the hut from the Rax Cable Car ’s summit station via the Höllentalaussicht viewpoint. On the Rax Plateau, various hiking trails connect the Gloggnitzer Hut with other huts, such as the Ottohaus, the Dirnbacher Hut (Unterstandshütte), and the Neue Seehütte.
Your hikes in the Vienna Alps should be a thoroughly pleasant and safe experience. Please therefore observe the following:
Preparation
Make sure when choosing the route that it matches your experience and fitness. Check the weather forecast beforehand. Weather in the mountains can change very quickly. Always set out properly equipped accordingly (e.g. rain protection).
Check whether the huts and snack stops you want to visit along the way are open. Inform someone about the route you choose and your planned return before you set off.
Always take suitable maps with you. Wear sturdy shoes appropriate for the route, bring sun and rain protection as well as water and a snack. Take your mobile phone and save the mountain rescue emergency number: 140
We always follow the marking no. 50 through the Große Kesselgraben. After about 5.3 kilometers, we cross a road. Continuing straight ahead, we reach the Gloggnitzer Hut.
There are few parking spaces available at the Kesselgraben stop.
Take the S6 - exit Gloggnitz, continue on the B27 to Hirschwang to the valley station of the Rax cable car, then to Kaiserbrunn, further to the parking lot at the entrance to the Große Höllental and about 1 km further to the Kesselgraben bus stop.
Take the regional train from Wr. Neustadt main station (direction Payerbach-Reichenau) to the final station. Then continue with the regional bus 1746 (direction Schwarzau-Gebirge) to the station Höllental Kesselgraben.
