Description

Experience a varied hike in the Falkenstein Nature Park in the small Lower Austrian municipality of Schwarzau im Gebirge. The route offers untouched nature and magnificent views. Depending on which return route you choose, surefootedness and a head for heights are required.

The weather in the mountains can suddenly change quickly. Always start out equipped accordingly (e.g. rain protection). Check whether the huts and snack stations you want to visit along the way are open. Inform someone about the route you have chosen and your planned return before you start.Depending on which return route you choose, surefootedness and a head for heights are required.
Equipment Always take suitable maps with you. Wear sturdy shoes adapted to the route, bring sun and rain protection as well as water and a snack. Take your mobile phone and save the mountain rescue emergency number: 140
Route description Start at the entrance to the nature park and turn right onto the mountain road towards Falkenstein. You will pass the alpine garden and the barbecue area. Now follow the path to the right over a small bridge, always uphill. The path crosses a forest road, which you continue to follow uphill. Along the route, you will pass the Herrengrotte – a perfect place for a short break and to admire the impressive rock formations. Continue the route until you reach Falkenstein, from where you can enjoy wonderful views.For the return journey, take either the same route or go back down into the valley via the Kirchensteig. Please note that this path is very steep and rocky and therefore requires surefootedness and a head for heights.
Parking Parking is available at the nature park.
Public transport You can travel in an environmentally friendly way and without your own car to the nature paradise by train and the RUFbus Semmering-Rax or bus line 341. From Vienna main station, you can reach Payerbach-Reichenau station in about 1 hour. From there, you can take the RUFbus to the nature park in about 30 minutes (register the RUFbus ride the day before via hotline +43 660 900 88 22).
