The “Sconarium” in the health resort of Bad Schönau features a cultural hall used for events such as concerts, cabaret shows, and performances, as well as a modern, interactive exhibition on the town’s healing resource—natural carbon dioxide gas. The name “Sconarium” is derived from “Sconnawe,” the first documented mention of the town (1267), and the Latin word “Arium” (room).
A spring, discovered by chance in the early 20th century and designated a healing spring in 1953, forms the basis for the town’s development as a tourist destination. The natural carbon dioxide gas that rises along with the water has a special healing effect in the treatment of circulatory disorders, as well as heart, circulatory, and vascular diseases.
Since this remedy is rare in Austria in its natural state of purity, this exhibition is dedicated to carbon dioxide gas and its outstanding effects on human health. Visitors will learn interesting facts about its origins, from the Big Bang to its use today. A specially composed soundscape, interactive screens, and quizzes about carbon dioxide create a pleasant atmosphere that promotes a sense of well-being.
