When peoplehear the term“Raxkönig,” they’re referring to none other than Georg Hubmer—a 19th-century visionary who developed the Höllental Valley for timber harvesting. Around 1800, the former log-floating entrepreneur organized the transport of firewood through the valley using log-floating channels, massive timber and water wheels, rakes, and weirs.

At the height of his career, Hubmer employed up to 400 forest workers and rose to become the most important employer and benefactor of Naßwald. He financed both a school and a house of prayer and was held in high esteem throughout the region.

Today, the Hubmer Memorial in Naßwald—a district of Schwarzau im Gebirge—commemorates this extraordinary man and his legacy.

Here’s what visitors can expect:

  • A lumberjack’s hut with a fireplace: Upon request, Sterz is even prepared here just as it was 200 years ago.
  • History of Timber Transport
  • Historical tools
  • Replica log flume
  • The Life of Georg Hubmer

Summer Highlight: Theater on the Open-Air Stage

During the summer months, the Naßwald Theater Association regularly hosts performances on the open-air stage next door—often featuring plays about the King of the Rax or other humorous productions.
