The Höhlturm rises above Wöllersdorf at the entrance to the Piesting Valley. The round defensive tower was built in the second half of the 15th century and served both to secure the Piesting Valley and to protect access to an underground cave, which was used as a refuge in times of crisis and war.
Today, the renovated tower is open to the public. An interior wooden staircase leads to the top, where a panoramic view of Wöllersdorf unfolds. Behind the tower lies the Höhlturm Cave, part of which—the so-called “ballroom”—is accessible. The Höhlturm is the landmark of the market town of Wöllersdorf-Steinabrückl and also forms the central motif of the town’s coat of arms.
This attraction pairs particularly well with a hike: The approximately 6.5-kilometer-long Panoramic Trail passes directly by the Höhlturm and offers additional views of the town and the surrounding countryside.
