At 1,644 meters above sea level, on the Rax Plateau, you can take a cozy break at the Ottohaus. But the Ottohaus isn’t just popular for its excellent cuisine. Right below the mountain hut, hundreds of plant species grow that are rarely seen in the wild anymore.
3 reasons why a trip to the Rax Alpine Garden is worth it:
- About 200 plant species across 4,000m²: From alpine stonecrop to anemones, the Rax Alpine Garden is home to native mountain plants that have become rare. Among them is the protected edelweiss.
- The gentian blooms blue: Very few people these days have the good fortune to discover a gentian along the trail. At the Rax Alpine Garden, this bright blue flower is carefully tended and nurtured.
- A Stop for Refreshments: From the summit station of the Rax cable car, it’s about a 40-minute hike to the Ottohaus. After a tour of the Alpine Garden, you can refuel for the return trip with classic local mountain hut fare at the shelter—where Sigmund Freud was once a regular guest.
- View: Next to the Alpine Garden is the observation deck at the Ottohaus, which offers a sweeping view of the Schwarza Valley.
