Hiking

Hiking over 1,000 hills

Sweeping views, lofty heights – without any mountaineering kit

As you hike through the Bucklige Welt, the view is constantly changing: hills and valleys shaped like waves, forests offering shade, and hilltops from which the view stretches to the highest point in Lower Austria, the Schneeberg, to Lake Neusiedl in Burgenland and Hungary. Dotted amongst them are small villages where fortified churches have shaped the villages’ history for centuries. There’s plenty of opportunity to take a break too: the inns and wine taverns offer a taste of local flavour and warm hospitality.

Tips for the best views

Viewing towers, hilltop castles and little-known vantage points are among the region’s most beautiful hiking destinations. The highest point is the Hutwisch viewing tower at 896 metres above sea level, accessible via shady forest paths either from Bad Schönau or along the Bakabu Children’s Adventure Trail from Hochneukirchen. Thanks to the great commitment of the local community, the s’Hutwisch inn has been established there as a place for hikers and cyclists to stop for delicious food and refreshments.

A rock face, a ruin, many stories: the Türkensturz near Scheiblingkirchen-Thernberg is a place steeped in legend. Its steep cliff and the caves in the rock have given rise to many stories over the centuries, ranging from hermits to traces of the Turkish siege. Our recommendation: the Meilensteinweg trail, starting from Seebenstein railway station – it leads gently uphill through the woods and past Seebenstein Castle, right up to the ruins.

If you’re up for a bit more of a challenge, the Rosalia Circular Walk is just the ticket. It covers 82 km and involves a climb of over 1,600 metres. You can choose the stages to suit you, and at the end of each day hearty foods await you at the many wine taverns. The cosy, family-run accommodations are a real treat for tired hikers’ legs, and if you fancy taking a shortcut, you can hop on or off the train with ease.

It is not the length, but the numerous vantage points that make the ‘Path of Views’ in Bad Schönau so special. This compact circular route takes you to several panoramic viewpoints, each offering a different perspective on the Bucklige Welt. Ideal for anyone who wants to see as much as possible in a short space of time.

Hiking with children

For families, themed trails are a great way to get started with hiking with the children. They encourage participation without being too strenuous: In Hollenthon, a lightning generator, thunder sheet and other features on the weather trail explain natural phenomena in a fun way; in Bromberg, the Witches’Trail tells the story of Afra Schick; and in Lichtenegg, a varied playground trail winds its way through the countryside.
