Long-distance hiking might conjure up images of summit crosses and steep climbs – but on the Rosalia Circular Walk, it’s possible even without a high-altitude mountaineering kit. The route, just about 80 kilometres long, takes you through forests, along the River Leitha on flat terrain and over ridges which, whilst demanding a good level of fitness, do not require mountaineering skills. This makes the trail suitable for families and beginners alike. The best bit: time and again, the trail winds its way through villages where bakeries, pubs and railway stations await. If you fancy it, you can treat yourself to a snack at a wine tavern or hop on the train and finish the long-distance trail at your own pace.

Long-distance hiking with a reward system

In Lanzenkirchen, an adventure awaits that turns children into real ‘masters of legends’. Eight legend trails featuring carved wooden figures wind their way through all the local districts. At each stop, there is a story from times long past – ranging from mysterious figures to wondrous events. You can collect stamps until you’re rewarded with a certificate at the end (the pass and certificate are available from the town hall; stamps can be collected at local restaurants and cafés). The map can be downloaded via the link below.

Modern hikers collect not only stamps but also digital achievements: with SummitLynx, you can earn a digital hiking badge for the Rosalia Circular Walk – simply download the app, check in at the spots and you’ll be sent a certificate to print out yourself. It doesn’t matter whether you complete the trail in one go or in several short stages.

Kilometre by kilometre, not only does your stamina grow, but so does your own collection whilst hiking with children.

The goal is to take a break

If you’re looking for a change of scenery along the way, there’s plenty to choose from: in Katzelsdorf, the Zinnfigurenwelt opens up a miniature world of 40,000 figurines; in Pitten, the museum PIZ1000 tells stories of the region; and on hot days, the Leitha river beckons with its shady riverside paths. Refreshments are provided by down-to-earth inns and family-run wine taverns along the way – not Michelin-starred cuisine, but honest, hearty portions that you’ve earned.
