The World Heritage cycle route leads from Gloggnitz railroad station via Schottwien and Maria Schutz to the Semmering. Cyclists tackle a similar elevation gain to that of the Semmering Railway on the 36-kilometer-long World Heritage Cycling Route. Admittedly with less luggage, but probably just as out of breath as the engineering marvel that, in 1854, became Europe’s first standard-gauge mountain railway to traverse viaducts, tunnels, and challenging terrain—and is now an UNESCO World Hertige site. Those who undertake this challenging tour will experience breathtaking views of this pioneering feat, over 160 years old, and also enjoy the sight of elegant summer retreat villas along the Semmering High Road.
