Café Konditorei Alber is located in the center of Payerbach—the perfect place to take a break after a hike or during a bike ride on the Schwarzatal Bike Route. The pastry shop is particularly well-known for its Reichenauer Biscuitzwieback.
Original Reichenauer Biscuitzwieback
The Reichenauer Biscuitzwieback was already a favorite among summer vacationers as far back as the 19th century. At Konditorei Alber, it is still baked today just as it was over 100 years ago. The recipe for this sweet biscuit originally came from the former cook at the Thalhof. At this restaurant—which was very popular at the time—she served her delicate Zwieback primarily to writers, artists, and even the imperial couple. At the end of the 19th century, Ludwig Alber and Ignaz Oberdorfer adopted the recipe for their bakery, which is now the Alber Pastry Shop.
At Konditorei Alber, the popular Reichenau Zwieback is now handmade by the fifth generation of the family and shipped to enthusiasts throughout Europe. In the 1960s, Rudolf Alber and his wife Anna also opened the Alber Café in Payerbach. Today, just as back then, the café is very popular for its homemade pastries and specialties.
