Hiking tour Starting from Schromenau, behind the Gasthaus zum Furthnerwirt
2-day variant from Schromenau to the Mamau as a connection between the Viennese and Burgenland Mariazellerweg. Shady, scenically varied variant of the Vienna Mariazell Trail through beautiful forests with fewer and gentler climbs than the Kieneck route.
2-day variant from Schromenau to the Mamau as a connection between the Viennese and Burgenland Mariazellerweg. Shady, scenically varied variant of the Vienna Mariazell Trail through beautiful forests with fewer and gentler climbs than the Kieneck route.
The Mariahilfberg-Spange is a more challenging and longer (2-day) but very scenic variant that connects the Vienna and Burgenland Mariazellerweg trails. It begins with a slowly ascending forest path leading into the valley through the Sieberlgraben and through a hollow path up to the Red Cross, where the view opens up to the Vienna Basin, Bad Vöslau and the Traisental. Along the ridge, the path leads us through flower and orchard meadows, past the Hohenwarth estate and fallow deer, through pastures with beautiful views of the Myra valley with its magnificent solitary rocks near Muggendorf to the Jagasitz inn (permanently closed). The trail continues to the Karnerwirt (playground, refreshment stop, reservoir with trout), then leads us along the Pernitz Biedermeier Trailwith its information boards through forests and over a saddle to Gutenstein. There is a lovingly maintained wayside shrine on the municipal boundary. Descending through deciduous forests, past the Seegraben water reservoir, the trail climbs gently uphill again to the Etschenberg, where we can already see our destination for the day, Mariahilfberg, and even the Schneeberg in the distance. The route continues across pastures and flower meadows to the Groisbauern farm, then down the cool, shady path to the Panzenbach stream. Here, take a narrow, little-known path up to the Biegelbauer-Höhe. After a refreshing sip of fresh cow's milk at the Biegelbauer farm, we are invigorated for the last section of the day: past the Waldbauernmuseum (Forest Farmers' Museum ), along the Wurzelweg (root path) past wayside shrines depicting the life of Mary, through dense beech forest to the Mariahilfberg. Emerging from the forest, the view opens up to the picturesque pilgrimage church standing on a small hill. pilgrimage churchand the Servite monastery. The climb is worth it just for the fantastic panoramic view of the Schneeberg, Schober, Öhler and the Großer Neukogel, Gutenstein's local mountain. We recommend spending the night at Gasthof Moser on the Mariahilfberg.
As an extension, the "Way of the Cross on Mariahilfberg" and the tour around the Residenzberg can be explored on Mariahilfberg.
On the second day, we set off from the Mariahilfberg in the direction of Mamauwiese and take the path past the Magdalenengrotte to the Schaftersbach. From the parking lot, the trail leads past the Frauenbrünnchen and a deer hut, taking you through a pine forest on partly wooden and partly rocky steps. At the signpost, the Schaftersbachweg branches off and continues gently downhill along forest paths and meadows, passing an idyllic little house on the left opposite the signpost.
At the junction with the country road, turn right and follow the asphalt road through the picturesque, slowly narrowing Längapiesting valley to the end of the valley(Zinssteiner). Here the Schober and Öhler, as well as the Dürre Wand, present themselves to the eye for the first time. Continue through an imposing gate along the forest path, initially straight, then in serpentines framed on both sides by game fences up to the Gobenzsattel. We follow the signposts to the left along a short section of forest road, then along the pleasant forest floor of a narrow game trail to the Schoberkapelle chapel and then continue across the cattle pastures of the Mamaualm to the Mamauwiese mountain inn.
Warning: Section Mariahilfberg -- Mamauwiese should not be walked at night!

Always carry suitable maps. Wear sturdy shoes adapted to the route, bring sun and rain protection as well as water and a snack. Take your mobile phone with you and save the emergency number of mountain rescue: 140
Day 1: Behind the Gasthaus zum Furthnerwirt we turn left after about 20m over a bridge on a wide footpath through the Sieberlgraben slowly uphill (red marking). After about 20 minutes of walking, just after the last house, we do not take the hollow path straight ahead (poorly passable after wind damage), but continue left along the forest road, keeping right at the bend (do not take the path that meets the forest road straight ahead there). After half an hour of walking, we reach the upper end of the hollow path. Following the marking (keeping left) we go briefly steeply up to the Red Cross. From there, you have a wonderful view over a large meadow towards the east. We turn right (long-distance hiking trail 01, red-white-red marking), after about 50 m follow the path to the left (attention, marking is hard to see). The wide hiking trail passes through forests and meadows without major altitude differences past Gut Hohenwarth, then meets the Piestingtal circular hiking trail 231 (red-white-red marking) and continues to Betsteig and the former Jagasitz guesthouse.
Walking time 3.5 h (half an hour later, a lunch break via the yellow marking at the Karnerwirt is recommended.)
At the Karnerwirt we walk a short stretch downhill on the road until after about 5 minutes a sloping meadow path begins on the left (a yellow arrow towards Gutenstein). We follow this path to Purbach, where it turns into a wide hiking trail. In Purbach we reach a road, which we follow downhill (turn right, "Kasperhof") to a turnaround (about 10 minutes, picnic table), there we cross a small bridge over the Purbach towards Gutenstein. The path is called Pernitzer Biedermeierweg and leads us with information boards through forests and over a saddle to Gutenstein, past the water reservoir in Seegraben. There (at a small wayside shrine) we meet the Gutensteiner Panoramaweg, which we now follow: the forest road on the right uphill to Etschenberg (view of the Mariahilfberg Church, the day's destination), then further through meadows relatively flat to Groisberg. At the farm we keep right, walk through the forest into the Panzengraben and turn left downhill there to the next farmer (Panzenbauer), where we at meadow height take the path to the right (please close the pasture gate again) over the Biegelbauerhöhe. This path leads us into the town of Gutenstein to the B21, which we follow a short way downhill to the somewhat off-to-the-left Waldbauernmuseum. From the museum we go to a bridge, cross the Piesting, and immediately after the bridge turn right to walk past Schloss Hoyos. We follow the paved road to the first side street on the left, there we turn off to the fire station and the junction to Mariahilfberg. Here we do not follow the street, but take the Piestingtal circular hiking trail 231 again, which shortly after the start of the pass road turns left. The so-called "Wurzelweg" is rather steep uphill, leads through the forest past wayside shrines depicting the life of Mary to Mariahilfberg.
Walking time from Jagasitz about 4.5 h.
Overnight stay at Mariahilfberg at Gasthof Moser.
Day 2: The next day we start at Mariahilfberg from the lower parking lot and take the Schaftersbachweg into the Längapiesting (red marking), first following the marking to the Magdalene grotto, then the path with partly wooden, partly rocky steps further to a crossroads (green signs). There we follow the sign "Längapiesting", first on a pleasant forest path, later moderately steep on a cart track and downhill over the meadow to a small, idyllic yellow house. After about 1 km we reach the main road at the crossroads (sign "Schaftersbachweg"). We turn right on the road downhill, at the next fork we turn right following the arrow "Mamauwiese". The road changes after about 15 minutes into a wide forest road, the gate there is open. Following the red marking, we reach the Gobenzsattel, from where the so-called Diebssteig (Attention: do not walk at night and walking sticks are recommended in wet conditions) leads to the Schober chapel and to Mamauwiese, where we follow the yellow signs to the Gasthof Mamauwiese (walking time about 4 h).
