In the Schneebergland region, winter offers more than just one way to enjoy the season. Sometimes you’ll be heading uphill on skis or with climbing skins, other times taking a leisurely stroll along winter trails and scenic walks – depending on the weather and snow conditions.
And when winter really sets in down in the valley, the classics come into play: ice skating on the rink and a short cross-country ski trail that’s been groomed.
The Skifamily Park Losenheim is designed for families and beginners: a T-bar lift with three slopes and a ski route offer plenty of variety, plus there’s a children’s area with two magic carpets and a mat ski slope, ensuring winter fun even when the snow conditions aren’t perfect. A ski school and ski/snowboard hire are available on site.
For ski touring around the Schneeberg chairlift, the four-seater chairlift takes you comfortably up to the Fadensattel (1,210 m) – a good starting point for winter hikes and (in suitable conditions) off-piste descents or tours in the surrounding area.
The Unterberg ski resort offers natural snow slopes and panoramic views of the Schneeberg, Rax and the Alpine foothills. Opening times are subject to snow conditions. In total, there are around 16 kilometresof slopes with four T-bar lifts, complemented by a children’s ski area and a fun park.
For ski tourers, there is a ski touring evening every Wednesday; selected runs remain open until 9.00 pm.
Winter walking in the Schneebergland region is the perfect way to enjoy the great outdoors: crisp air, crunching snow underfoot and trails that are well-maintained even in the coldest months. From short loops in the valley to scenic walks – depending on the weather and snow conditions.
When the snow and weather conditions are right, a short cross-country ski trail is groomed in Puchberg am Schneeberg: the Panoramaloipe at the foot of the Schneeberg, ideal for a brisk ski with lovely views. The length and route of the trail depend on the current snow conditions.
The ice rink in Markt Piesting is situated right next to the Waldbad and offers winter fun on the artificial ice rink – with a lovely view over the village. Handy: the facility uses a clever system whereby the heating pipes are used for the Waldbad in summer and for ice production in winter. A kiosk provides refreshments, and there is also an on-site skate hire and skate-sharpening service.
