The Schneebergland region lies on the edge of the Alpine foothills and is easily accessible from Vienna. Even as you travel there, theSchneeberg and Hohe Wand mountains come into view on the horizon – a familiar sight from the Vienna Basin that quietly promises: this is where the change of scenery begins.
Wiener Neustadt railwaystation is the main hub for public transport to the Schneebergland region. From here, two regional rail lines run into the region, serving numerous towns where walks and excursions often start right by the station.
The regional trainfrom Wiener Neustadt to Puchberg am Schneeberg passes through several towns in the Schneebergland region and terminates right at the foot of the Schneeberg. From here, you can continue on the Schneebergbahn to the highest mountain in Lower Austria, or take bus route 330 towards Pernitz and the Piesting Valley. Hikes start within walking distance of the stations or can easily be combined with short bus journeys.
The regional railway from Wiener Neustadt to Gutenstein connects the town with the villages in the Piesting Valley. Along the route there are numerous starting points for hikes, the Piesting Valley Cycle Route and for Excursion destinations in the surrounding area. There arealso bus connections from several stations, for example to Muggendorf via bus route 332 or to Rohr im Gebirge.
Coming from the north/Vienna, the easiest way to reach the Piesting Valley is via the A2 Südautobahn and the Wöllersdorf exit; continue on the B21 towards Pernitz/Gutenstein and on to Excursion destinations in the valley. Coming from the south/Graz, we recommend taking the S6 (Neunkirchen exit) and continuing via the roads towards Wiener Neustadt/Wöllersdorf into the Piesting Valley.
Coming from the north/Vienna, take the A2 (e.g. Wiener Neustadt-West exit) and then the B26 towards Bad Fischau-Brunn, St. Egyden and on to Puchberg am Schneeberg. Coming from the south/Graz, the quickest route to the Schneeberg area and Puchberg is usually via the S6 (Neunkirchen exit) and then via Ternitz on the B26.
Many excursion destinations and hiking starting points in the Schneebergland region are accessible directly from the station or via a short walk. This selection highlights destinations with particularly good transport links – ideal for day trips without a car.
