Description
The monastery emblem (2,076 m) marks the highest point of the Schneeberg - and also the highest peak in Lower Austria. Once you reach the summit cross, the view opens up over the high plateau and far out into the eastern edge of the Alps: a classic place to pause, take a photo and take a deep breath. The name "Klosterwappen" (monastery coat of arms) is a reminder of the former ownership and border conditions on the mountain: historically, a "coat of arms" was set into the rock here as a sign - the name has survived to this day.
Hiking info: The ascent as a plateau hike from the Hochschneeberg summit station (Schneebergbahn) is particularly popular: easy to do, with great views and ideal for those who want to reach the summit without a long ascent to the valley. Those who are more athletic can also aim for the monastery crest via more challenging paths from the valley. Sturdy footwear and weatherproof clothing are essential on the Hochschneeberg, as it can quickly become cool and windy even in summer.
