If Archduke Johann of Austria were in his early thirties today, he would certainly be a startup founder. There’s just one catch: his death in 1859 was over 150 years ago. The Archduke Johann Exhibition in Thernberg in the Bucklige Welt commemorates this important maverick.
Johann had everything going for him. He was a member of the House of Habsburg, an Austrian field marshal, and a sharp mind. For over 21 years, he was the owner of Thernberg Castle and its estate, and he modernized the Bucklige Welt region for the long term. He also supported the idea of building the Semmering Railway.
Among his greatest achievements were experiments to improve agriculture, the establishment of a pomological school, the consolidation of significant collections, and efforts to document folk culture and customs.
