Kirchschlag in the Bucklige Welt region holds historical significance as a fortified border town. This is evidenced by several architectural monuments, such as the castle ruins with their watchtower. The castle is situated at an elevation of 480 meters and was built in the 12th century. Today, remnants of the former border fortress still stand, and the watchtower serves as a lookout point over the landscape of the Bucklige Welt. The eerie tales of the “women’s cage” and the “brotherly struggle” originated around the castle and bear witness to life in those days. The watchtower now serves as an observation deck.
Events, such as the Kirchschlager Advent Market or the Great Knights’ Festival in the summer, also take place at the castle ruins.

Several short trails lead up to the Schlossberg from the town center:
- Forest Nature Trail (loop trail)
- Easy trail to the castle ruins (also accessible in winter)
There’s also a trail leading to the castle from the hiking starting point behind the Hotel Post Hönig—but it’s narrow and steep, so it’s only suitable for sure-footed hikers. This trail is closed in winter.
Tip: Before or after your hike, it’s worth taking a short stroll through the town of Kirchschlag in the Bucklige Welt. The main square offers many places to stop for refreshments and small shops. Directly behind it lie the rose garden, through which the Zöbernbach stream flows, and the late-Gothic Wehrkirche from the 15th century
