Description
Reichenau an der Rax has a lot to offer. Besides cultural highlights such as the Festival Hall, Wartholz Castle, Reichenau Castle, and the Kurpark, the town is also a starting point for numerous hikes to the surrounding mountains. Besides the high alpine mountains Rax and Schneeberg, the Kreuzberg is also nice to hike. Via easy walking trails and somewhat more demanding mountain hiking trails, you hike from Reichenau via Hinterleiten and Stoier Höhe, passing the Josefskapelle up to 1093 meters altitude at the Speckbacher Hut. There is a place to stop at the Flackl Wirt. At the top on the Speckbacher Hut, you’ll be treated to good homemade cuisine. A special highlight is the oldest and probably largest rhododendron in Europe. The 105-year-old tree covers an area of 131 m²! What is naturally not missing at the mountain hut is the wonderful view of the surroundings with Semmering and Schneeberg.
The hut is accessible by car or bus, and it takes about 2 hours to walk back down to Reichenau on hiking trails.
