Schneeberg rack railway

Climb the easternmost 2,000-metre peak in the Alps in effortless fashion with the historic rack railway from Puchberg – even reachable with public transport!

Since 1897, the Schneeberg rack railway has been carrying passengers up the easternmost 2,000-metre peak in the Alps (operating hours: April to November). The mountain station is the highest in Austria, and opens up the Alpine terrain on Schneeberg.

Salamander Railway to Buchtel Station

The historic steam locomotive is still in operation every Sunday in July and August. Regular service has been taken over by the Salamander, a modern railcar train that takes only 40 minutes to cover the 9.8 km route to the Hochschneeberg mountain station. It is best to book tickets online!

Hiking trails on the Schneeberg

Across the relatively flat mountain landscape around the summit, the family-friendly plateau hike offers a fantastic view. The accompanying audio guide provides interesting background information. Back down into the valley with the Salamander – or on the 10 km long marked “Zahnradbahnweg” which runs for the most part along the rack railway route.
