Naturfreundehaus Knofeleben

Light-flooded rooms, local delicacies and a hiking award

The hut was awarded the Austrian Hiking Quality Mark in 2014. Thanks to the panoramic windows, you can enjoy the great view from inside the hut. The light-flooded rooms and the light wood provide a very special atmosphere.

Traditional hospitality meets modern architecture

The panoramic windows make the Naturfreundehaus Knofeleben on the Gahns Plateau (1,250m above sea level), which is an offshoot of the Schneeberg, one of the lightest mountain huts in Austria. Incidentally, the name “Knofeleben” refers to wild garlic, which can be found here in large quantities in the right season. The seasonality and regional focus of the menu is exemplary. Trout and char from Piringer, lamb and sheep’s cheese from Althammerhof, fruit, vegetables and eggs from Piri farm.

Honoured with the Austrian Hiking Quality Mark

In autumn 2014, Naturfreundehaus Knofeleben was one of the first huts in the Vienna Alps to be awarded the Österreichisches Wandergütesiegel (Austrian Hiking Quality Mark). Hut manager Vitsch Krenthaller and his team had something else to celebrate in 2014: In an online survey by Österreichs Wanderdörfer e.V., the Naturfreundehaus Knofeleben won 1st place in the “Most Hiker-Friendly Hut” category. In 2015, the hut won 2nd place.

The Naturfreudenhaus Knofeleben is also the end of a stage of the Arc of the Viennese Alps trail.
