Kirchberg am Wechsel hiking village

Awarded the Austrian hiking seal of quality

Several resorts in Austria have been chosen to receive the Austrian hiking seal of quality as a hiking village. These locations offer hikers especially good service, due to their infrastructure and offerings.

Only one hour's drive from Vienna and easily accessible by train via Gloggnitz, you will find Kirchberg am Wechsel in the heart of the Feistritz valley. Kirchberg sits at the foot of the Wechsel mountain range, an elongated ridge which is well-known for the Schwaigen mountain pastures, which offer stunning views and great regional food.

The superb hiking routes in Kirchberg am Wechsel are the reason for its distinction as a certified hiking village. Here, in addition to fantastic accessibility to public transport, there are also specialist hiker’s hotels where those staying overnight can learn precisely which tours are best for getting to know the natural and cultural landscape of the Wechsel. This includes a visit to Steyersberger Schwaig (1,372 m), which is as an entry point to the Wechsel area. From here, you can hike to the Hochwechsel or take the hut loop through Kranichberg and Feistritz Schwaig. In winter, cross-country skiers can embark on the 70 km long Wechsel panorama cross-country ski trail.

Guided hiking

Those who prefer to hike in a group can join guided hikes in the hiking village every Saturday, which set off from Steyersberger Schwaig and Feistritzsattel car parks. Those staying in the hiking hotels can join free of charge, there is a charge of 5 euros for everyone else. You can sign up at the Kirchberg tourist office from 20th May until the Friday beforehand at the latest or by phone 02641/2460 (Mon - Fri 8 am to 4 pm).
