Wallfahrtskirche Maria Schutz

Description

The Maria Schutz pilgrimage church is rightly described as a "jewel of the Semmering region". For more than 250 years, Maria Schutz has been inspiring visitors both artistically and spiritually. The pilgrimage church has also been a monastery church since 1925 and is the only Passionist monastery in the whole of Austria.

The baroque church with its magnificent high altar and two church towers is known above all for its water of grace. Countless testimonies tell us that Mary, the Mother of God, has given people comfort and help here for centuries. Healings before and during the plague epidemic in 1679 prompted the people in the area to build a chapel.

What makes a visit to Maria Schutz so special:

  • The magnificent basilica, where the "holy Bründl" is located behind the magnificent high altar with its precious statue of the Virgin Mary. All worries, fears and problems can be washed away here so that you can return home strengthened.
  • Another place of peace and contemplation in Maria Schutz is the Lourdes Grotto. A processional path leads from the basilica to the grotto with a statue of the Virgin Mary in a rock.
  • Maria Schutz overlooks the surrounding mountains and valleys. Numerous seating areas and the viewpoint directly in front of the church offer a special panoramic view.
  • After devotional and spiritual moments, the restaurants directly in Maria Schutz provide culinary delights. You should definitely try the popular Klosterkrapfen from the Kirchenwirt.
  • If you want to go even higher, you should take a hike up the Sonnwendstein: The mountain chapel is located at the summit at 1,523 meters. From here you have a unique panoramic view of the Rax, Schneeberg and the Semmering region as well as Wechsel and the Bucklige Welt.
