Brief description

The Regional Route L starts at the viaduct of Kalte Rinne and leads to Schloss Gloggnitz. The Regional Routes are part of the trail network on the Wiener Alpenbogen (WAB). Hikes along these routes offer unique views and insights. The Regional Routes are connected to the Wiener Alpenbogen trail. This way, circular hikes can be created in combination with the long-distance trail.

Description

This route runs for large parts along the railway hiking trail along the Semmering Railway, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and starts at the impressive viaduct of Kalte Rinne, where the regional route branches off from the main trail. Lonely farm roads, natural field and hiking paths, and wonderful hiking trails characterize this route.

Fascinating views and insights into the sometimes rugged but always safe-feeling landscape reveal themselves behind every bend and ridge. Schloss Gloggnitz offers a highlight at the end of this path.

Route description WAB - Regional Route L: Kalte Rinne Breitenstein - Schloss Gloggnitz

We start the hike of the Regional Route L at the viaduct of Kalte Rinne on the Wiener Alpenbogen and walk down the street to Breitenstein. At the Blunzenwirt (closed Tuesday, Wednesday) we turn left onto the main street and follow the signs to Breitenstein station via a bridge. Slightly above, we reach the street at the fire station, continue uphill past the municipal office and leave the main street straight into Lindenstraße. After a short walk we walk uphill along the street and keep slightly right into Untere Bahnstraße. We look back towards Breitenstein and the viaduct Kalte Rinne. The asphalt road turns into a cart path, which leads us uphill past meadows to a scenic road. Here we turn right and follow the road downhill, turn right at houses into the “Blauer Einschnitt” and get very close to the Semmering railway. A few minutes later, the railway hiking trail continues straight to Klamm, but at the crossroads we turn left to Kreuzberg. The forest road leads to a street that takes us to the ridge on Kreuzberg. On the left is the Polleres guesthouse inviting you to a lively snack (closed Monday), continuing right on the gravel road. At the next intersection by a plague column, we go left on the gravel path. Note the views of Schneeberg and Rax here. In the forest, we follow the hiking trail towards Klammer Chapel and steadily walk slightly uphill. At a somewhat clearer spot in the forest, we turn left onto the red-marked hiking trail. The narrow forest path now leads steadily downhill to Kochhof. On the right is a chapel and a large lime tree; we continue left of them into the street towards Gloggnitz. After a few meters, however, we leave the street and take the hiking trail up to the Schneeberg view. We follow the lonely hiking path eastward (also railway hiking trail to Gloggnitz). We leave the forest and stand before a wide meadow and catch the first view of Gloggnitz. The railway hiking trail turns right across the meadow here; we walk left along the forest edge and climb again some elevation to a beautiful viewpoint. Here we again walk eastward along the forest edge and from now on follow the cross trail (partially blue marked) downhill to the street. We now go under the railway tracks and follow the gently descending street to Schloss Gloggnitz. Here the Regional Route L ends.

You have the option to spend a night in Gloggnitz or walk the short path to Gloggnitz station. You can also take the path to Payerbach on the Regional Route K here and meet the Wiener Alpenbogen path again there.
