Route description Semmering Kummerbauer route

The starting point of the hike is the Semmering pass height at the valley station of the Semmering Hirschenkogel cable car. The forest road starting at the western end of the parking lots leads 3 km uphill to the Hirschenkogel - Sonnwendstein trail junction. Here, the hikers who have chosen the comfortable ascent by the Semmering Hirschenkogel cable car also join. A little hidden, the Hochalmweg initially begins here through the forest. The rocky ascent is rewarded with an alpine hike with a fantastic panoramic view to the summit of the Erzkogel. Variant: The next trail junction is also reachable more comfortably via the forest road. Hungry hikers can now make a detour to the Polleroshütte on the Sonnwendstein, which is also rewarded with a magnificent panoramic view from the terrace. From the trail junction after the Erzkogel before the Sonnwendstein, it goes downhill along the forest road, past the alpine meadow by the mountain rescue hut, and following the forest road southwards until the "3 Crosses" trail junction. At the Materln, the wine trail turns left to the Gasthof Kummerbauer. To the north, the path leads via the Göstritzgraben to Maria Schutz, the place with its famous pilgrimage church. A short stretch along the road to the fire station. To the left begins the forest path, which leads back to the starting point Semmering pass height.

Safety information

Your hikes in the Vienna Alps should be a thoroughly beautiful and safe experience.

Please therefore observe the following:

Make sure when choosing the route that it matches your mountain experience and fitness. Check the weather forecast beforehand. Weather in the mountains can change unexpectedly fast. Always start out properly equipped (appropriate footwear, rain protection). Check whether the huts and snack stations you want to visit are open. Inform someone about your chosen route and planned return before you set off. Stay on marked paths and avoid shortcuts. Due to dryness, meadows and forests are easily flammable. Treat fire with respect and report any possible fire to the fire brigade immediately (122). Do not throw rubbish in the landscape and dispose of it properly.

Please note that grazing animals are present on the Sonnwendstein in the summer months. Information on behavioral rules can be found here.

Further safety tips for your hike can be found here.
