Schwarzau im Gebirge
Description
Surrounded by the two highest mountains in Lower Austria, the Schneeberg and the Rax, lies the municipality of Schwarzau im Gebirge. The tranquil village on the Schwarza river is a popular destination for hikers, mountaineers and pilgrims heading towards Mariazell.
Worthwhile experiences in Schwarzau im Gebirge:
- A visit to the Falkenstein-Schwarzau im Gebirge Nature Park: this natural gem on the western slope of the Falkenstein is a delight with its swimming pond, petting zoo, animal enclosure (deer, chamois, mouflons) as well as barbecue area and playground - perfect for families.
- Time travel in the Höllental: Over 200 years ago, "Raxkönig" Georg Hubmer opened up the Höllental for charcoal production. Today, the faithfully reconstructed lumberjack's hut at the Hubmer memorial site shows how lumberjacks used to live.
- Hike up the Obersberg: The tour to the Obersberg (1,464 meters), one of the most beautiful panoramic mountains in the foothills of the Alps, takes a good two hours. Particularly rewarding: the Waldfreundehütte is just a few steps below the summit.
- Experience open-air theater: The Nasswald theater group not only brings the story of the "Rax King" to the stage, but also some hilarity.
- Wild Nasswald: experience adventure in the Vienna Alps. From guided white water tours in canoes, kayaks or rafts, survival workshops and axe throwing to stylish overnight stays in mountain glamping.
