Naturpark Sierningtal-Flatzer Wand

Description

A paradise for nature and sports enthusiasts

The Sierningtal-Flatzer Wand Nature Park covers around 15 km² in the municipality of Ternitz and offers a varied recreational area for visitors of all ages. The landscape is characterized by gentle, wooded hills that rise from 415 m to 898 m above sea level. Due to its location at the transition from the Pannonian to the Alpine climate, the nature park is home to an extraordinary variety of flora and fauna worthy of protection.

Geology and natural monuments

The Wetterstein limestone bedrock favors the formation of numerous karst caves - over 60 are known in the park. Some of them are accessible and of archaeological or paleontological importance. Of particular note is the Langes Loch cave with its impressive stalactite formations. Other natural monuments include the imposing Fleischesserföhre pine, the armchair trees with their candelabra-shaped growth and the Warme Lucke, a rocky niche from which warm air flows.

Leisure and infrastructure

The nature park offers around 50 km of hiking trails marked according to the European system, inviting you to enjoy a variety of tours. Additional experiences are provided by geocaching, a small animal enclosure and numerous information boards along the trails. The Sierningtal nature park hut (run by the D'Steinfelder mountaineering guild), the Neunkirchen Naturfreundehaus on the Flatzer Wand and various inns and Taverns in the surrounding area are available for refreshment and relaxation.

Sporting highlights

The Flatzer Wand is an insider tip for sport climbers: over 300 climbing routes of varying degrees of difficulty as well as numerous bouldering and via ferrata options offer ideal conditions for beginners and professionals alike.

Sights in the surrounding area

In addition to the natural monuments, the medieval Stixenstein Castle and the viewing platform on the Gfieder are well worth a visit. From the lookout point, you can enjoy an impressive panoramic view of the Schneeberg, Hochwechsel and Rosalien mountains.
