Payerbach
Description
Nestled between Semmering, Rax and Schneeberg, Payerbach is a popular place for vacations and excursions. With the completion of the Semmering railway in 1854, more and more guests came to Payerbach and neighboring Reichenau for summer retreats. Then, as now, the region was a delight with its beautiful nature, which is ideal for relaxing and being active - and with its impressive architecture, which still characterizes the town today.
Worthwhile excursions in Payerbach:
- Hike along the railway hiking trail: this railroad line was once the most important means of transportation for high society from Vienna to get to the Semmering for their summer retreat. now a UNESCO World Heritage Site: Carl Ritter von Ghega's Semmering railway. Along the route, a railroad hiking trail leads past imposing viaducts and impressive buildings.
- Wine tasting in the Vinodukt: In the Schwarza viaduct (228 m long, 25 m high) near the station, there is now a wine shop with a great selection from the wine regions along the southern railway line from Vienna to Trieste.
- A trip back to imperial times: in the historic Payerbach-Reichenau station, an imperial waiting room recalls the visits of the Habsburgs. If you want to delve even deeper into the monarchy, visit the historicpost office in Kübwhere even Empress Zita sent her letters.
- Grillenberg show mine: This is a historically preserved ironstone mine and one of two show mines in Lower Austria alongside the Hinterbrühl lake cave.
- Hiking starting point Payerbach: Numerous hikes lead from and to Payerbach to the Naturfreundehaus Knofeleben, the Speckbacherhütte or Jubiläumsaussicht.
