Details for: Hike to the Weinzettlwand

Brief description

From the Breitenstein train station, hike to the viewpoints "Semmering View" and "Breitenstein View"

Description

Semmering View

From where you can comfortably rest on a bench, a spectacular view opens to the west into the lower Adlitzgräben, the cadastral community of Klamm with the castle ruins and the Eselstein, which Carl Ritter von Ghega used as a planning starting point for the Semmering Railway due to the 360-degree view. Behind it rise the peaks of the Otter group, also visible are Wartenstein Castle and the extensive Wiener Neustadt basin.

The forward view captures the fashionable Semmering. Dominantly stands the South Station Hotel. A bit above is the Silbererschlössl, where Victor Silberer, a pioneer of the Semmering's tourist concept, left a structural monument.

Also visible are the viewpoint “20-Schilling View”, the Doppelreiterwarte, and Hirschenkogel.

Breitenstein View

A few meters further lies the viewpoint “Breitenstein View”, where the view opens onto probably the best-known structure of the Semmering Railway: the monumental viaduct “Kalte Rinne”. It is the largest of the two-story viaducts of the UNESCO World Heritage Site. Dramatically beside it are the steeply falling rocks of the Pollereswand and the town center of Breitenstein. In the background is the Heukuppe, which is the highest summit of the Rax.

Route description Hike to the Weinzettlwand

The hike begins at the Breitenstein train station. From here, always follow the signs towards the Klamm train station. First, go down the street to the town hall. At the intersection, turn left into the Lindenstraße , which later turns into a forest path.

At the next fork, you will encounter an asphalt road again. Follow this uphill. On the right is a playground with a locomotive. Continue along the Untere Bahnstraße, which eventually turns into a forest road.

At the end of this forest road, there is a pasture immediately to the right that must be crossed. Please observe the safety instructions! As soon as you reach the start of the forest, you will have to pass through a gate again and follow the path going uphill to the left. The viewpoints are marked with yellow hiking signs showing the green Bahnwanderweg logo. Shortly after, you reach an intersection - go left uphill to the Semmering viewpoint and right to the Breitenstein viewpoint.

Return the same way down from the viewpoints. You can now go back to the train station or continue along the Bahnwanderweg to Klamm

Safety information

Your hikes in the Vienna Alps should be a thoroughly beautiful and safe experience.

Please take note of the following:

Make sure the chosen route matches your mountain experience and fitness level. Check the weather forecast beforehand. Weather in the mountains can change suddenly and rapidly. Always start out equipped accordingly (appropriate footwear, rain protection). Check whether the huts and snack stations you want to visit along the way are open. Inform someone of your chosen route and planned return before you start. Stay on marked paths and avoid shortcuts. Due to dryness, meadows and forests are easily flammable. Handle fire respectfully and immediately report any fire to the fire department (122). Do not litter and dispose of waste properly.

Some sections of the path run along pasture areas. Stay on the marked paths and keep a respectful distance from the grazing animals.

On the Weinzettlwand there is danger of falling – do not leave marked paths!
