Gutenstein

Description

The market town of Gutenstein in the Gutenstein Alps is the largest village in the Piestingtal valley. Today, as in the past, visitors rave about the idyllic summer retreat in the village as well as the meadows and shady resting places in the region. This view has inspired many artists. That is why the Piestingtal is still known as the Biedermeier Valley.

The climatic health resort is best known for Ferdinand Raimund, who had his adopted home in Gutenstein. Every year, the Raimundspiele Gutenstein pays tribute to the great playwright with a theater festival at Hoyos Castle. There is also plenty on offer musically, such as the Gutenstein master classes with musicians from all over the world.

If you want to get to know the landscape around Gutenstein, you should take the Way of the Cross on Mariahilfberg. The hiking huts are also lovely, such as the Enzianhütte on Kieneck or the Gauermannhütte (tip: lentils with dumplings). Or you can visit the Waldbauernmuseum. Here you can find out how farmers used to earn a little extra on top of their meagre wages.
