Along the hike, you pass many beautiful spots, such as the St. Corona storage pond, the Almrauschhütte (not operated) and the Kampsteiner Schwaig (closed) with breathtaking views of Schneeberg and Hohe Wand. The highlight of the route is the summit of Kampstein at 1467 meters above sea level. From then on, it's a gentle downhill past the Herrgottschnitzer-Franz Kaupe-Haus, which is also open in winter (closed Tuesdays), to the destination of the hike, the Orthof. From here, you can reach the town center of St. Corona or turn off earlier and return to the starting point in Unternberg. There are dining and accommodation options such as the Wexl Lounge, Ferienhaus Gruber-List, Ofnerhof, or Bauernhof Dissauer.

Route description Snowshoe hiking: Kampstein circuit

The starting point of the snowshoe route is the Wexl Arena St. Corona. East of the valley station, we turn right from the road upwards. We always hike straight uphill (right at the first two forks, left at the next three, and finally keep right) until our route crosses the road. We continue straight and follow the path left past the storage pond and then right to the Almrauschhütte. We turn right onto the road and follow it for about one kilometer. The road now bends to the right. Here we can shorten the route via a path that goes straight ahead and reach the Kampsteiner Schwaig. From here, we head east over the Kampstein summit to the Herrgottschnitzerhütte. Here we turn left downhill to the upper station of the former Simas lifts. Passing the lifts, we turn right and reach the road, which leads us to our destination, the Orthof.

Safety information

Make sure the chosen route matches your experience and fitness level. Check the weather forecast in advance. Verify whether the huts and snack stations you plan to visit are open. Inform someone about your route choice and planned return before you set out. Weather in the mountains can change rapidly. Always set out well equipped accordingly. Special caution is necessary when moving in the mountains in winter. Keep in mind that your schedule can be disrupted by small things in winter. A weather change or technical defect with snowshoes can significantly hinder progress. Also consider that it can get dark as early as 4:00 PM in winter, and a night outdoors in winter can quickly become life-threatening.

Please also consider that markings may be invisible due to snow in winter and prepare well for your tour!
