Brief description

The route takes you to the best viewing points on the railway hiking trail on Wolfsbergkogel. The 20-Schilling view and the Double-ridge lookout tower offer imposing views over Semmering Railway World Heritage Site. The return journey takes you past Semlitsch Sculpture Park and historic Semmering villas back to the Südbahnhotel. As they walk along the high road , the High Road Museum offers hikers historic insights into how the Semmering landscape was conquered.

NOTE: Please be aware that this winter walk may not be completely maintained in snowy conditions and can have patches of ice. Use at your own risk! Please equip yourself appropriately, such as with sturdy shoes, sticks, waterproof outdoor clothing, hat, etc. Make sure you have enough to drink in winter too! Be aware of it getting dark early and carefully plan your route!

 

Description

From the top of the pass via the high road past Hotel Panhans to the Holy Family Parish Church and rectory. Downhill to the station and east along the track under the underpass to Wolfsbergkogel halt. Steeply uphill for a short way to the former sanatorium and the Double-ridge lookout tower and the "20 Schilling view". The view down onto Semmering Railway through the Adlitzgraben and the highest spurs of the Eastern Alps, Rax and Schneeberg, is very imposing. The path then passes through the forest above the entrance to the Wolfsbergkogel tunnel and on to the Fleischmann viaduct in Adlitzgraben. To the left the path runs uphill to the golf course and the Südbahnhotel. Continue straight on here to the top of the pass.

Route description Semmering - Magical Views – Tour

Starting from the top of the pass, we walk along the high road to Hotel Panhans and on to the Holy Family Parish Church. We then go downhill to Semmering station. Here you are recommended to visit the Semmering Railway World Heritage Centre and the "Carl Ritter von Ghega" monument. We continue to follow the signs for the Lower Austrian railway hiking trail to the lookout points around Wolfsbergkogel. We then branch off left from the railway hiking trail and the path above the small football pitch takes us past Semlitsch Sculpture Park. From here we walk steeply uphill past Leidenfrost Villa, along Friedrich Schüler Straße to the former Südbahnhotel. Here we meet the high road. We walk past Panoramahotel Wagner as far as the parish church and back to the top of the pass.

Directions

Coming from Vienna, take the A2 to the Seebenstein intersection and then take the S6 to the Maria Schutz/Semmering exit. Follow the L 4168 local road into Semmering and go to the top of the pass. Distance Vienna - Semmering 95 km; Graz - Semmering 100 km

Parking

Public parking is available at the top of the Semmering pass.

Take the train from Vienna Meidling via Wiener Neustadt to Semmering station.
