Brief description

Winter and snowshoe hiking on the Rax is one of the favourite activities in the region.

We go up to the plateau on the Rax cableway, the oldest cable railway in Austria, which started operation in 1926. Once you arrive at the top, you are met by snow-covered alpine meadows, fantastic views and healthy, cold mountain air. The Ottohaus is the first lodge you reach after the upper station. But before that you can enjoy the unique views of the Schneeberg. The next station, New Lakeside Huts, owes its name to a small lake that disappeared shortly after the First World War. It continues over the Trinksteinsattel and the Scheibwaldhöhe to the Gloggnitzer hut. From there, the path leads back to the starting point of the hike.

Route description Rax expedition (only recommended with mountain guide)

Starting point for this route is the upper station of the Rax cableway (1544m). From here, we will follow the trail along the red summer markings to the Ottohaus (1644m) (open in winter on weekends when the weather is fine and public holidays (catering area only)) and along the lake trail (also marked red) to the Neue See hut (1648m) (open in winter on weekends when the weather is fine and public holidays (no overnight accommodation throughout the year)) at the foot of Trinkstein. Now we will walk 200 meters uphill along the red mark to the Trinksteinsattel (1850m). We will continue to follow the red marking in the direction of Habsburghaus (approx. 5 - 10 min), then walk uphill to Scheibwaldhöhe (1943m) along the green marking. Continuing, we will go along the red marking direction Gloggnitzer hut (1550m) (on the weekend, simply managed by club members (overnight stay possible)). From there, the route will lead us over the Klobenthörl to the Dirnbacher hut (1477m) and further ascending over the "Hofhalt" to the Ottohaus and back to the starting point.
